If you've purchased one of our editable wedding stationery templates, personalising your design in Canva is simple... even if you've never used Canva before.
Our templates have been professionally designed so you can easily change your names, wording, colours and other details while keeping the overall layout and styling intact. Once you're happy with your design, you can send it over to us and we'll take care of the professional printing.
This guide covers everything you need to know before getting started.
How Do I Open My Canva Template?
After purchasing your editable stationery template, you'll receive a link to access your design in Canva. Simply click the link and follow the instructions to create your own editable copy of the template.
We recommend signing into your Canva account before you begin so that your changes are automatically saved as you work. We'd also recommend using Canva on a desktop or laptop where possible.
Click ‘Use template for new design’ to create your editable copy
How Do I Edit the Text in Canva?
Editing your wording is easy. Click on the text you'd like to change, highlight the existing wording and type your own in its place.
You can personalise details such as your names, wedding date, venue and any other wording included within your chosen template.
Where possible, we recommend keeping the font sizes close to those used in the original design. The typography, sizing and spacing have been carefully chosen to complement the layout.
If your wording is longer than the example text, you may need to make small adjustments to the font size or positioning.
Click any editable text box, highlight the wording and type your own
How Do I Change the Font Size?
Select the text you'd like to adjust and use the font size box within Canva's top toolbar.
Try to make small adjustments rather than dramatically increasing or decreasing the size. Very small text may become difficult to read once printed, while oversized text can affect the balance of the design.
Use the font size box to adjust your text. Try to stay within our recommended sizes
How Do I Change the Fonts?
Select the text you'd like to change and use Canva's font menu in the top toolbar.
However, we recommend keeping the original fonts wherever possible. Each template has been professionally designed using particular combinations of fonts, sizes and spacing.
You'll find details of the fonts used within your template, making it easy to restore the original styling if you accidentally change something.
Select your text, then use the font menu to choose another typeface
How Do I Move Text and Other Elements?
To reposition something within your template, simply click on the element and drag it to where you'd like it to sit. As you move elements, Canva will display alignment guides to help you keep everything centred and evenly positioned.
We recommend keeping your design relatively close to the original layout. Each template has been carefully created with spacing, alignment and balance in mind.
Can I Change the Colours?
Absolutely. You can personalise editable colours to better suit your wedding colour palette.
Select the element you'd like to change and click the colour option in Canva's toolbar. You can choose a colour manually or enter a specific HEX colour code if you already have one.
Please remember that colours displayed on a phone, tablet or computer can look different when professionally printed. Screens display colour using light, whereas printing uses physical inks or toner, so an exact screen-to-print colour match cannot always be guaranteed.
Paper colour, paper texture and the printing method chosen can also affect how a colour appears.
Select an editable element and click the colour square. You can choose a colour or enter a specific HEX code
Keeping Text Away From the Edge
It's important to keep names, dates and other essential text away from the edge of your artwork. During professional printing and trimming, there can be a small amount of movement, so anything positioned too close to the edge risks being trimmed.
Canva has a useful margin guide that makes this much easier to see. To turn margins on in Canva, go to:
File → Settings → Show margins
A dotted line will appear around the inside of your design. Keep all important text and essential design elements safely within this line.
Background colours, photographs and decorative elements that are intentionally designed to run off the edge can extend beyond the margin.
As a general rule: important information stays inside the margin; backgrounds and full-bleed design elements can extend beyond it.
Keep important text and design away from the trim edge. It will show red if elements get too close
Can I Add a QR Code?
Yes absolutely. Please make sure you test your QR code before submitting your artwork.
Scan the finished QR code directly from your design and, where possible, test it using more than one phone.
It's also important not to make your QR code too small, as reducing it significantly can make it more difficult to scan once printed. We recommend no smaller than 2cm x 2cm.
Will My Printed Design Look Exactly Like It Does in Canva?
We work to reproduce your artwork as beautifully and accurately as possible, but there will naturally be some differences between viewing a design on a backlit screen and seeing it printed onto physical paper.
Colours can vary depending on your screen settings, paper choice, printing method and the colours used within your design.
This is completely normal within professional printing and is one of the reasons we recommend viewing our paper and colour samples if you're particularly particular about your finished colour palette.
Should I Order Extra Wedding Invitations or Stationery?
Yes, we strongly recommend ordering a few additional pieces with your original print order.
It's much easier and more cost-effective to include extras within your initial print run than to arrange a very small reprint at a later date.
Extras can be useful for last-minute guests, lost invitations, addressing mistakes, photographer flat lays and keepsakes.
Can I Make Changes After Ordering?
Please make sure you're completely happy with your finished design before submitting it for printing.
Once your artwork has entered production, we may not be able to make changes.
If you notice a mistake shortly after placing your order, contact us as soon as possible and we'll always do our best to help where production hasn't already begun.
What Should I Check Before Sending My Canva Design for Printing?
Before submitting your artwork, take a few minutes to carefully proofread the entire design.
Check your names, wedding date, venue, addresses, ceremony time, RSVP information, website addresses, QR codes and any other important details.
It can be surprisingly difficult to spot mistakes in something you've been looking at for a long time, so we strongly recommend asking someone else to proofread the finished design too.
You are responsible for checking and approving all wording and information within your personalised Canva design before printing.
A Few Things to Avoid When Editing Your Template
For the best possible finished result, avoid the following:
Moving important text too close to the edge
Making important wording extremely small
Using low-resolution images
Stretching photographs or graphics out of proportion
Dramatically changing the original layout
Using screenshots instead of original image files
Forgetting to test QR codes
Submitting your artwork before proofreading it
Ordering too few pieces
When in doubt, keeping your design close to the original template will usually give you the best result.
